The mascot was deliberately designed as a genie at P&G's own direction. A 2014 NYT obituary for original illustrator Richard Black quotes P&G's communications manager: the company wanted "magic from a bottle" represented by a genie, and the artist was directed to draw one. Genies/jinn originate in Arabic and Islamic folklore.
